Yamaha G -vs- C series?

Does anyone know what the main difference between the Yamaha G and C series pianos are?

I'm looking for a used grand and have played several Yamaha C2s and C3s that I liked, but I just saw an ad for a 6'6" G at a very nice price. I haven't played a G, but I was wondering if it was worth the trip to check it out.

Sharing MIDI and MPGs of my piano playing "Freeboards" to Piano and more...

Hello and harmony 2 all,

I come from a totally synthetic music background, and playing "pop" music in clubs, gigs, and such. Nowadays I am only focusing on Liszt, Chopin, Mozart, Beethoven and the like...

But I still have lots of my music that is like Caribbean, Jazz, Peaceful and even CHAKRA BALANCING affirmations and visualizations!!!

http://www.Givnology.com/compose.htm has videos and links to music files,

http://givnology.com/eve/forums/a/frm/f/80560593 has some topics where I am sharing my new "techno developments," MIDI files of classical performances.

I'm enjoying that I now have learned to improvise on the Waltz format, and even composed a song where the waltz goes into the "circle of fifths" from jazz/latin!!! It is called "What You Sync," here it is: http://givnology.com/WhatYouSync0.mid well, what do you sync? he he..

Love and light, Teo Do (Re, Mi, Far, Soul....)

i have a spinet that i have half a mind to record *one of these days*, although i know i'll need to probably throw down a decent chunk of change to get decent mic's. can anyone recommend how many i'd need and what type? someone once recommended two mic's - one for upper and another for lower strings, and that static mic's would work best. thoughts?

and also, what are you recording via? laptop? independent recording device?

i know..so many questions.. ;)

I know this Liszt piece is out there, I even used to have a copy. But now I can;t seem to find it anywhere.
It wasn't published until the 1950's.
Does anyone have it?

I am seeking a composer(s) to work with on songs in these genre's: CCM, musical theatre, country, alternative, contemporary rock, dance, r&B. I am an accomplished melody/lyric writer and I have yet to find a writing partner here in California. When I lived in Nashville it was easy to find talented people to collaborate with. Guess I haven't been looking in the right places.

I'm a composer, church pianist, and piano teacher. I really love to sing and play the piano at the same time, although I've been known to roll up my sleeves and dig hard into challenging piano pieces. I'd love to learn how to play several ragtime pieces well. I play an interesting mixture of pop, classical, and jazz piano, and I'm a fair hand at sight-reading unfamiliar pieces.

Anyway, I'd just like to say that I'm never more comfortable or happy than when I'm sitting at the piano with a pencil near by, hashing through a musical project. It's such fun stuff. =)

Any of you others play New Orleans stlye piano stuff like me? I''ve got a band (The pleasure Seekers) that does lots of Professor Longhair, Dr. John, bunch of other types of tunes done in that sort of style. Playing a big Mardi Gras in Portland on Tuesday.

I also play a lot of local rock shows with my other band Jesus Presley and also for hire with other acts... And lately I've had a ton of casino gigs playing behind celebrity impersonators and getting my own Elton John impersonation off the ground (see pic in my profile if you'd like). Doing occassional jazz/casuals too. I love playing a wide variety of stuff, andbranching out seems to be the only way I can get the bills covered.

What sort of performing do any of you do?

just joined. i thought i'd commiserate with fellow piano addicts. i just got my spinet 6 months ago (i grew up with a fraying chipped upright that was incredibly out of tune) and i can't stop playing.

i recently stopped smoking and am picking up opera again, and am trying to teach myself how to sing and play at the same time, which is a trip.

anyway, this is a rather pointless post, but thought i'd introduce myself :)

Recording a piano (or going digital/midi?)

Hi everyone

Ive recently written a bunch of piano music - some of it still needs a little work (and practice!) but im fast approaching the stage where Id like to record some of it, with a view to producing/releasing an album

Does anyone have experience of producing high quality recordings of a piano? I have occasional access to a Steinway Grand, tho am concerned that an acoustic piano must be difficult to mic up

Im wondering if instead it might be better to record on a digital piano, or even on a midi keyboard, tho that suggests to me losing some of the subtlety and timbre of a real quality acoustic

any help/thoughts/ideas gratefully received

Rich
Xx

Ivers & Pond?

I was given an Ivers & Pond grand piano in decent shape. I'm restoring it myself this summer as a way to keep myself busy. It's a neat project so far.

There's not much information about Ivers & Pond on the internet. I've googled it several times and looked at the first few pages of results but can't find any official information (and no official website, so I'm assuming they are no longer a company). I'd really like to find some history about the piano I have. So I'm turning to tribe.net for advice on where to look.

I did find a site that approximated the age of the piano by the serial number. It said 1900-1920.

My "Affair" with Horowitz's PERSONAL Steinway!...

Hello!

My name is Michael Levine, and I've been playing "gigs" for over 30 years, mostly here in the San Francisco Bay Area. I'm very pleased to have encountered this "Tribe", and would like to share an unforgettable musical experience I had, back in 1993, when the folks at Sherman Clay decided to send Vladimir Horowitz's own Steinway (modestly named CD 503, the 314,503rd piano made by Steinway -- "CD" an abbreviation for Concert Department) on a "concert tour" of its own. This was only the second time in Steinway's illustrious history they had done this for a Steinway Artist (the first being Paderewski)!
The Sherman Clay personnel were extremely gracious and generous to me, and allowed me two 2-hour time slots alone with this legendary instrument, to both play and record on it!
Was this piano noticeably different from others? Yes! The action was relatively light, and extremely touch-sensitive, with a crashing, thunderous bass that was a hallmark of Volodya's playing, and characteristic of Steinway in general. The gossimer transparency of the treble, and the evenness of the action from top to bottom, made CD 503 a joy to play! However, I was cognizant from the beginning that neither I nor anyone else I heard playing it, could draw from this great instrument the kind of color, timbre, sonority and glistening coruscation that ONLY the immortal Vladimir Horowitz was capable of producing! It was Volodya's ability to see horizontally through the architecture of a piece, be it Scarlatti, Liszt, Scriabin or a host of other composers,
while differentiating each note from that which preceded and succeeded it, that made for such fascinating listening. One was as awestruck by his ethereal pianissimos, which radiated to the last row, as by his elemental, virtually superhuman power, velocity, and overwhelming emotional force! I was fortunate enough to have heard the Maestro live on four occasions, after one of which I actually met him. The man was strong! His firm handclasp, broad, winning smile, and the charismatic warmth he radiated (along with his incomparable genius) suffuse, in my opinion, virtually every measure of his vast recorded output. You can see a photo of me at that very special instrument on this site, and I invite anyone else with a Horowitz story to contribute as well. God Bless You, Volodya!!

I think I like Boesendorfers better, but they are highly colored and you can't quite be yourself. Same with American Steinways, which are lovely of course.

Piano rock

Hi y'all, new on this Tribe.

So, I have been incredibly focused on the piano in the past year or so, and I'm playing as much as I can. I play from a lot of different genres, but the work I'm most interested in doing right now is straightforward rock (I know, I know, ain't nothin' straightforward). I'm interested in creating music, rock music (specifically, influenced by the indie rock of today and the past decade), that has the piano right in the forefront, instead of as color as most rock bands seem to use it. Even just, say, piano and drums as a band.

My question is, having heard very little of piano-focused rock, are there people out there doing this sort of music? I wanna hear someone who has the piano as the/a lead instrument, even someone who's playing solo in the rock vernacular.

Any recommendations?

First of all, hello to everyone; I just joined this group.

I'm a beginning piano player living in the Los Angeles area, and I was wondering if there were any other Los Angeles people who'd want to get together. Perhaps just a munchy event or even something where we could bring keyboards.

Any interest?

Although I'm an excellent accompanist and read pretty well, I'm not what I would call a *technician*, in terms of playing level. And, I compose art songs beyond my own playing level.

I'd like to find someone who reads exceedingly well who could attempt a few of these things I've written (yes, they're all scored, on Logic and are quite legible).

Piano Teacher Needed

Hello..... I am wanting to actually put in the time & effort to learn piano. Or, specifically... keyboard. I live in SF and I'm willing to pay for a 1/2- 1 hour lesson each week to learn the basics and get some exercises to work on.

I am a laptop-based electronic musician, so this is to get more of a handle on the technique side of playing this instrument. I don't think I'm really interested in learning to read music, although I'm possibly open to it. ( Opinions on weather it's necessary anyone?? )

Mostly I want to learn chords, scales, progressions, fingering etc etc And improvisation techniques.

Please send me a private note if you are interested in taking on a student. I can pay cash or I can trade bodywork (7yrs. licensced massage therapist specializing in deep tissue work)

Talk to you soon.

muting... opinions? advice?

I live in a split house where I have one downstairs neighbor in the basement apartment.

She is pretty sound sensitive, and here I am one floor up with my lovely Beckwith upright. Playing just about everything. So we agreed to go in on some sort of sound muffling project together.

So far my piano technician has helped by rigging a felt mute bar for me. There's no middle pedal to hook it up to, so I just hand place and hand remove it. But it may not be enough.

Any other muting ideas... errm, ones that don't involve moving altogether or altering my piano?

Jazz Lessons

I'm trying to learn jazz piano. I've made a lot of progress this first month, but I am concerned I might be making some bad habits. Maybe someone more experienced can give me some advice.

I've got the curved finger tapping down pat-- that's where the best leverage is. I practice at least two hours a day. Some day I can go for three hours non-stop.

I mostly play scales on white keys only. You'd be amazed at how much variation can be played into the scales. I've got the fingering down pretty good. Cross overs-- there's two for each hand, each in both directions, makes a total of eight. Now that I've got these down, my five fingers, always end up in the same position no matter what octave I'm at. I'm starting to practice a litte bit each day with my eyes closed, listening for each new postion on the scale.

Right now I'm just perfecting the right and left hands separately. Occasionally I try both hands, and it's always very exciting to see, how well they work together, but... I can't do it for more than dozen seconds right now.

I know I have the fingering right, but here's my big question. It's about timing. I usually play with the metronome low in the background, but only follow it half the time. When I play in time, it's very distinctive. My foot taps or my body sways back and forth. But then just as often, I just run wild up and down the scales with no regard for timing-- going fast and going slow, loud and low, all at the whim of the moment. Until I crash-- which means... I make an obvious mistake. It's like driving a car, if you keep on going faster and faster, sooner or later you've going to make a mistake. And while it may be exhilarating, like driving fast, crashes or mistakes happen often and without harm.

Is this a bad way to be learning? Should I force myself to always stay in time? Letting myself run wild without regard to timing-- is this forming a bad habit? Or... possibly is it an integral part of jazz?

posted here because it might be interesting to the community.

have you as a technician ever lacquered the hammers? i've managed to avoid it by doing fine filing and ironing hammers until now; we have a customer who wants his new Kawai GE-20 to sound like a *Pearl River* (??!?!?!???) !

contrary to the reputation of asian pianos in general, the newer kawais actually end up needing brightening quite a bit, particularly here in the deep south when a lot of southern baptist churches are buying them. but geez. meh. i *have* to lacquer these hammers for this customer. suggestions for what kind of lacquer, what kind of thinner, and how much to apply and where on the hammer to apply it?

i feel rather dirty.

Piano Questions.

Hello all, I am new to this tribe and have questions.
I have been playing the piano for 12 years but have recently moved into a yurt (for those of you out there who don't know what this is, it is a glorified tent), which means there is never consistent temp or humidity. I am worried about bringing my piano into this environment.
Do you have any suggestions on how I might keep it safe or what electronic supplements are not too expensive but very functional for a classical and modern player?

Thank you for your time
Tre

Finale 2003 question

I have a small dilemma. I am trying to notate some music using Finale 2003. My problem is slightly unusual.

Let's say you have one bar of 4/4, in treble clef. Let's say you fill this bar with all 8th notes. But then let's say that you try to add half notes on top of these (as piano chords sometimes turn out this way) without altering the eighth notes already on there. But Finale doesn't like that input, and will change the note(s) to half notes instead of just adding them on.

It seems like maybe it's some preference or command that I haven't figured out to undo on Finale 2003. Is this situation easy to get out of or am I screwed?

Thanks in advance,

LV

Rediscovering piano--Ear Training??

I would like to get back into playing the piano, but I need some help. I took 7 or 8 years of lessons in grade/middle/high school, but I wasn't very diligent about practicing, so I didn't really progress beyond a 3rd or 4th year student's ability. Problem: I can read music, but can only play one hand at a time. Trying to do both hands together is challenging and takes some work. I think I have coordination issues--like my eyes can only tell my brain to operate one hand at a time, or something. I'm wondering if some form of ear training might be the answer for me if hand/eye coordination is the problem. Does anyone have any recommendations for software, books, or anything similar that can help me get back into this and move beyond my current "blockages". Thanks!

Hey all,

I've been looking for a good Digital Piano for a bit now.

I'm looking in the "Less than $1000" area, but i'm going for weighted keys.

I've been told that the Yamaha P60 or 90 are my best bets, and that I should stay away from the $499 new Casio.

Anybody know of some other good ones?

i own a 7' young chan grand. not as bright as a yamaha, but excellent dynamics and very well built.

it's been moved too many times to mention, as well as having been in storage for a year at one point. as a result i've got a couple of hammers that don't dampen all of the strings on a multi-string note completely and as a result cause often dissonant overtones when other notes are played.

has anyone done self repairs on their piano? recommend any good books on the subject? i'm good with mechanical stuff, but is this a job for a professional?

my son is pushing 4 years and is showing a very real interest in the grand piano at home. he doesn't bang on it, he plays individual keys and can be both gentle and strong and definitely shows a sense of dynamics and melody. i'm constantly surprised when i hear him playing around with the piano because it doesn't sound like what i'd expect a kid to be doing...

is it too early to start with piano lessons? i guess it's never TOO early, except i don't want to make it too much of a stress point. what kind of teacher should i be looking for?

Hi everyone, i'm new :)
I've been playing for 20 years, and took lessons for about 9 of that 20. I play mostly classical, sometimes theater tunes. I have an upright older Baldwin. I know i have to get it tuned after it is moved and that (i think) can cost a few hundred dollars by itself. But does anyone have any experience moving thier piano? How expensive is it? I'm in the NY area.
Thanks in advance!

some chopin from my brother and i

plug these urls into your real player. these were recorded on my young chan back in 1998 by my good friend bijan marashi and mastered by the amazing holmes ives. the production was top notch although the playing is a bit amateurish. still, hope you enjoy.

polonaise 1 op.26 nr.1 - http://www.popmonkey.com:554/ramgen/jules/ra/polonaise1.rm - this isn't the entire piece so i kind of cheated coming back out of the second section.

nocturne 1 op.9 nr.1 - http://www.popmonkey.com:554/ramgen/jules/ra/nocturne1.rm - i've since mastered this piece (it's my favourite of chopin's work) and i wish i had the time to re-record it, the version on the website is painful now, especially that last run (ow).

prelude 7 op.28 - http://www.popmonkey.com:554/ramgen/jules/ra/prelude7.rm - a bit heavy handed approach to this sweet and simple prelude. i still look at number 24 in wonder.

fantasie impromptu - http://www.popmonkey.com:554/ramgen/paul/ra/fantasie.rm - this is played by my brother, who is much better on the black and whites than i will ever be. we're not concert pianists, so there's some sloppy bits, but overall it's a real good job considering the difficulty of this piece.

enjoy
