recording?

i have a spinet that i have half a mind to record *one of these days*, although i know i'll need to probably throw down a decent chunk of change to get decent mic's. can anyone recommend how many i'd need and what type? someone once recommended two mic's - one for upper and another for lower strings, and that static mic's would work best. thoughts?

and also, what are you recording via? laptop? independent recording device?

i know..so many questions.. ;)

I'd ask a recording engineer about that sort of question. I've never mic'd myself ... only been recorded in situations where there's an engineer (either live at a cabaret or live in a studio ... but I never had to touch or adjust a microphone myself).

calamity...It all depends on what sort of sound your spinet has and what part's of the tone you'd most like to get out of it in the recording.

What sort of music do you plan to record?
Will it be just piano or are other instruments or voices involved?

A spinet would likely not be a great choice if your looking for fullness, but it would probably record well if your playing honky tonk stuff.

Different mikes will push different aspects of the sound but listen closely to your piano in the room where you plan to record it. Listen to it from close up and far away. Also listen for extreneous noises (squeeks or action noise). While these may be pretty innoffensive in the room, on tape they can be a huge bummer. Also listen to the piano from behind the soundboard if you can, that's often a good place to mike an upright.
